Biography

Bill was a Founding Partner and Executive Committee Member of the firm from its inception in 2017 until his passing on June 20, 2024. Bill also chaired the firm’s Construction Practice Group. After graduating from Notre Dame and then Brooklyn Law School, Bill began practicing law in 1977 and embarked on his legal journey toward being a litigator and trial lawyer of recognition. His path led him to become the Managing Attorney in New York City for Transamerica Insurance Company and Royal Sun-Alliance. This experience gave him a holistic view of litigation. Bill visualized the needed result from both insurer and insured perspective. He understood the importance of implementing strategy to achieve the outcome, but he never forgot that there were people on both sides of a litigation.

During his legal career, he took over 100 cases to verdict. In over five decades as a trial lawyer, Bill obtained defense verdicts from New York to California. He was admitted in multiple jurisdictions at clients’ requests on specific large exposures and would routinely parachute into matters as trial counsel on the eve of trial. A bulk of his practice involved defending construction companies and product manufacturers. He represented the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in high-profile damage trials in 2009. Arising from the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Bill’s experience included counseling clients on risk avoidance. His vast experience with construction losses caused many clients to seek his counsel in contract formation and insurance procurement.

Bill was an accomplished appellate lawyer. He prevailed in two of the United States’ most esteemed venues: the New York Court of Appeals and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, along with most of the State Appellate Courts in New York.

Bill was consistently ranked as AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, along with numerous other top legal rankings. He presented regularly for the New York State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Bill was in an elite group of practitioners who act as faculty for the Judicial Institute, a group tasked with giving instruction and trial guidance to newly elected New York Supreme Court judges. He was often sought as a counselor and instructor in China and Asia for companies assessing U.S. product liability exposure. In this regard, he was called upon in certain matters to provide expert testimony.

Bill always viewed things with a client’s perspective, learning their business and always asking them “what keeps you up at night” and working to be a counsellor and trusted. He instilled that ethos in the firm – always ensuring that a clients concern is heard. His industry and legal knowledge, and ability to strategize a resolution were highly valued resources sought daily by his clients and colleagues. In this regard, Bill had the ability to apply experience within the context of the ever-changing legal issues; thereby ever seen by others as a trusted advisor.
